Team conflict is inevitable, and learning how to work with it instead of diffusing it is key.
In this episode of the Beauty of Conflict, Susan and CrisMarie give the first part of a presentation about harnessing a team’s competitive advantage at the TERRA Staffing Group. They start off by introducing the healthy benefits of conflict and how to tolerate and leverage that discomfort to pull out the best that team has to offer as opposed to paying the cost of leaving it unaddressed. Teams should be environments where uncomfortable conversations can take place, and as an exercise, Susan and CrisMarie poll their audience to identify those issues or situations where they feel most uneasy. Afterward, they introduce three opt-out styles, the Superstar, the Accommodator, and the Separator, to which people tend to go to in order to reduce tension, explaining the characteristics of each specific type and why none of them are productive pathways in the end.
