Bullying is still an important topic we should keep talking about and science has made exciting advancements in tackling it.
In this episode of the Beauty of Conflict, Susan and CrisMarie are joined by Jennifer Fraser to talk about the importance of taking action against bullying and how to repair the harm done to bullied and abused brains. These are also topics she covers in her latest book: The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health. While working at a private school, a case of bullying where teachers had become bullies themselves came to her knowledge, creating a toxic environment for students. Jennifer went through an extensive process to handle the situation only for the whole matter to be covered up. This began her journey of research and action against bullying and in defense of embracing brain health. Jennifer speaks with Susan and CrisMarie about how bullying is a learned behavior that we absorb as children as a means of survival, from those in power who use abuse to maintain it. She explains how being subjected to different abuse dynamics damages someone’s brain, but also how to repair it through training and activation exercises.
Tune in to this episode to learn about why focusing on brain health is key to dealing with bullies and those affected by them!
About our Guest - Jennifer Fraser
Jennifer Fraser is the Founder of The Bullied Brain https://www.bulliedbrain.com/.
She’s an award-winning educator, best-selling author, and unlikely whistleblower. With a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, she is trained to take diverse discourses out of their silos and put them into an arena to see if it changes the conversation.
Her new book The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health hit the shelves in April 2022. Highly-awarded neuroscientist, Dr. Michael Merzenich says The Bullied Brain is “scientifically the most thorough treatment of the subject on planet earth.”
Pulled into an abuse crisis at a school where she was teaching, Jennifer came face to face with the broken system that enables perpetrators and further harms victims. In Teaching Bullies (2015) and then The Bullied Brain (2022), Jennifer debunks the myths that uphold the bullying and abuse framework with science.
Jennifer’s goal is to bring vital insights and practical applications of neuroscience to the people who need it, specifically those who have been bullied and abused. Brain scans now reveal the neurological scars on the brain from the trauma. What’s empowering and inspiring is that the brain is highly adept at healing.
In The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health Jennifer lays out a step-by-step plan to repair the harm done to bullied and abused brains.
