Have you ever been surprised by people’s reaction to you sharing your point of view or telling the kind truth?
For leaders this is a self-awareness issue, not about holding back passion or opinion, which is often a leader’s solution, and in the end it does not work.
The EI solution lies in paying more attention to your impact. Notice the non-verbal clues that may signal you have hit a trigger. Listen and watch for signs of defensiveness. Then instead of explaining or piling on more of your perspective, step out of the content and reflect back to the person what you think the impact is you are having.
Too often leaders try to monitor what they do – instead of paying more attention to what they do next!
